AI for Precision Medicine: Behind GoHub Ventures’ Investment Decision in Quibim

After some time following the technological innovations shaping the future of healthcare, we’re happy to share our investment in Quibim by participating in its $50 million Series A, one of the most promising funding rounds in Spain’s venture history.

Over the years, the Valencia-based company has earned a leading position in the Diagnostics and Imaging area, which has drawn significant attention not only for its rapid growth driven by artificial intelligence, but also for its increasing investment appeal: 42% of total digital health funding in 2024 was directed toward AI-focused companies according to CB Insights.

As a VC fund born and based in Valencia, we’ve had the privilege of closely knowing Quibim’s team led by Dr. Ángel Alberich-Bayarri since the startup’s early days, making the investment decision clearer when the opportunity to support its expansion arose. Let’s dive into the factors that led us to back Quibim in its $50M funding round.

Transforming Precision Medicine with AI-Powered Imaging

Traditional diagnostic tools, including genomics and pathomics, often lack the comprehensive insights required for precise clinical decision-making. At the same time, medical imaging remains vastly underutilized, with less than 0.1% of imaging data analyzed for research and AI model development.

Quibim addresses these gaps by developing foundational AI models for imaging, capable of extracting actionable insights from MRI, CT, and PET scans. These insights enable precise phenotype characterization and outcome prediction in fields such as oncology, immunology, neurology, and metabolic disorders.

Their technology addresses critical infrastructure gaps that prevent pharmaceutical companies from leveraging their clinical imaging data for predictive biomarker development. The company offers a fast and easy solution for data handling, harmonization, and analyzing imaging data. Altogether, this makes Quibim a company poised to lead the radiomic space, capable of developing an enormous range of imaging-based biomarkers and predicting patient outcomes during clinical trials and in clinics. Furthermore, these algorithms have the potential to be developed as companion diagnostics (CDx) in the future.

Unique Data Quality and Multi-Source Dataset

Data quality is essential for Quibim’s success, especially as pharmaceutical companies increasingly demand a multimodal data approach and greater therapeutic specificity. By focusing on high-quality data collection from the start, Quibim has built one of the largest and most comprehensive medical imaging datasets. This rapidly growing dataset combines images, diagnostics, and patient outcomes, allowing Quibim to deliver significantly more accurate predictions and lay the groundwork for building digital twins of the human body.

The data is sourced from collaborations with hospitals, research consortia, and partnerships with major life sciences companies. Their QP-Insights platform centralizes this information, including longitudinal data and imaging, to provide a broader understanding of patient health. This diversity of data sources and types keeps Quibim at the forefront of innovation, enabling them to develop products that truly make a difference in precision medicine.

Top Commercial Partnerships and De-Risking Development

Quibim has partnered with industry leaders like Merck, Novartis, Imaging Endpoints, and Philips, unlocking over $100 million in potential revenue. These partnerships, which often expand into long-term collaborations, validate Quibim’s capabilities, solidify its role as a key biopharma partner, and help scale its solutions in precision medicine by exploring new therapeutic areas.

Current biopharma collaborations are key for Quibim’s product scalability success as it leverages biopharma knowledge and data access to co-develop predictive models and AI algorithm biomarkers. A win-win process where these algorithms accelerate biopharma’s drug development process and expand Quibim’s product pipeline across different therapeutic areas, de-risking their product development process.

What’s Next for Quibim?

With Series A funding, Quibim is scaling its U.S. presence while continuing growth in Europe. Its FDA-cleared solutions and AI-powered imaging tools are set to transform drug development, reduce costs, and accelerate time-to-market, reinforcing its leadership in precision medicine through AI.

Quibim’s strategic commercial expansion, its exceptional team of clinical researchers and engineers collaborating across five offices (Valencia – HQ, Madrid, Barcelona, Cambridge, and New York), its leadership in a rapidly growing Healthtech sub-sector, and the immense market potential were the key factors that inspired our decision to invest in this groundbreaking company.
